The Problem With Being Literate

I was talking with my friend Jami, she was recommending some books for me to read. She had some mighty fine recommendations which I intend to check out and then I mentioned to her that when I read a lot my thoughts form in narrative. So do hers! Does this happen to anyone else?

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.
I was walking with my mom around Dallas Center one evening. Then all the sudden the thoughts in my head were things like “She walked the dark streets, kicking the dried up leaves that had made their way to the gutter.” Foolishness like this. I mentioned it to my mom at the time. I let her know that I thought I had been reading too much because my thoughts were forming like a book. My mom just chuckled and paid me no mind. Sometimes the best option for those in my life is to ignore me until I stop talking nonsense. I understand.

Now I realize, it wasn’t nonsense! It’s a too-much-reading epidemic!

Here’s my FRIENDLY advice: don’t read too much.

Perhaps you should come work for me, Kasey.

Interesting. I must be reading just the right amount, because I don't think this happens to me much.

We do, however, narrate small animals and people that don't know we're looking at them. For example, a squirrel in the yard looking for a nut it burried last year. We can read this squirrels mind, and we narrate it out loud. :) "I know I put that nut right here. I swear, it was right here... where the EFF is my EFFIN' NUT?!!" Fun times.

I think I'll just continue to read less. Thanks for the offer, Mr. Peterman.
I do think I could have sold the hell out of the urban sombrero.

Becky—My mom used to speak for my dog. It was MAGNIFICENT.
